Pathfinder

Well, I've been playing Pathfinder, and I've got to say, I'm hooked. It's really fun, although I've enjoyed the rpg aspect of it more than the battle aspect. Battles actually take a really long time, and with many characters, it gets boring waiting for your turn. But in all, I'm planning on buying the books, probably from Bookmans, so I can start playing when I go to graduate school, and I'll possibly DM.

Men In Black 3

I'm kinda confused about why they waited so long to make a sequel/why they are making a sequel after so long, but I'd give this a try.

Did You Hear About Our John?

Man, I love Catherine Tate. Ever since I saw her on Doctor Who, I have to click on a link if it's got her in it. Her stuff is just great. Here's one of my favorites.

Dallas Trip

So, I'm writting this in Dec, but it happened over Thanksgiving weekend, so that's what I'm dating it as.

I got to see my boyfriend Marcus over Thanksgiving break! It was tons of fun. I don't get to actually see him in person all that often, so every time I do, it's the best feeling in the world. We actually didn't do much, we just hung out with his friends and helped make Thanksgiving dinner. Well, it was mostly him doing the cooking because I do not know how to cook, although I got to chop stuff, I was so proud. I felt like a bad gay because they (the girls) kept talking about this fashion designer guy and I had NO idea what they were talking about. I didn't even realize they were talking about a person. But then my boyfriend asked me what they were talking about, and I loved him even more. <3 Overall, awesome weekend. I got to spend almost all of it with him. But so much homework to do when I got back to school. :( I get to see him again over winter break though, I can't wait.

Oh, and pumpkin pie. I got to eat some of the best pumpkin pie. It was awesome. Man, now I want some pumpkin pie...

Even though this video is most likely NSFW (Not Safe For Work), I thought it is something good to know. I actually learned a few things from this.

Coming Out

Okay, so earlier this year I had already come out to my mom and dad. This past Sunday I came out to my sister. She said she already knew (which I had guessed) and everything was cool. So I texted my cousin who I had been wanting to tell, but had been waiting to get immediate family done first. She took it well also. (I texted her beacuse I barely get to see her. Probably won't get to till Christmas) So I am done coming out! :) Well, done in the sense that I don't care who finds out how anymore. I'm not going to hide it, but I bet I'll still have to come out, probably for my entire life since heterosexuality is the norm....oh well...

Pathfinder

So I've started playing Pathfinder. Well...we actually haven't started yet, I've just begun my character. I decided halfling. Thought he would be fun. :) He's actually a scorcerer. Don't remember the name of it, but the one where it from natural talent. And that's all I have so far, lol.

Anyway, trying to do this between all the school work I have to do, but I need a distraction. I'm starting to feel myself burn out. Being at school seven days a week, usually around 7 hours each day....cannot wait for Thanksgiving when I get to see my boyfriend.

Zachary Quinto

And he's out! From his blog:

"when i found out that jamey rodemeyer killed himself - i felt deeply troubled.  but when i found out that jamey rodemeyer had made an it gets better video only months before taking his own life - i felt indescribable despair.  i also made an it gets better video last year - in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time.  but in light of jamey's death - it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.  our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country.  gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying.  parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance.  we are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world.  we are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government.  i believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society - and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action.  jamey rodemeyer's life changed mine.  and while his death only makes me wish that i had done this sooner - i am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me.  now i can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world.  that - i believe - is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other."

I'm glad he's out now. I think the more people that are out (when they're ready), the faster it'll be a non-issue. And yes that statement is directed at myself, as I prepare to come out to my entire family (cousins, aunts, etc.)

I am seriously loving this fan music video. It's a great summary of clips from seasons 1-3 of Fringe, and the song just has a Fringe tone. You should check it out.

Why do gays love Pokemon?

Okay so every gay guy (which, not including myself, is only two) who grew up with Pokemon still loves Pokemon. Even I still do, even though I don't have much time to play it anymore. I'm wondering if there's a trend here, because even the one lesbian I know also loves Pokemon. Is there a thing where if you're LGBT, you love Pokemon as an adult, or am I self filtering my data because all these people I'm using as examples are my friends and will therefore have some things in common with me? It can't do with being sciency because (counting myself) two of the four LGBT people who play are not science/engineering majors.

I would love to figure this out, so if you have some examples either way, comment below. The only contraint I would put on this is to have the LGBT person being used have grown up with Pokemon. My question here is why, in my experience, does Pokemon keep the attention of LGBT people who grew up loving it?

I suppose it could also be the reason straight adults love it, but I actually do not know any of those in person.

Thursday:
Big Bang Theory:The Russian Rocket Reaction

I'm sad to see The Playboy Club go, but I cannot wait for The Walking Dead to start next week. I loved the first season, eventhough I'm not a fan of horror. Well, does The Walking Dead count as horror? I'm not too sure...either way I'm watching it.

The Playboy Club

The Playboy Club got cancelled. :( I know not that many people liked it, but I thought it was good. Not the greatest, but it was worth watching. Although I'll admit a lot of my interest was in the gay rights group.

Timeline of River Song

Spoilers if you haven't watch the series 6 finale: The Wedding of River Song

Sunday, October 2, 2011

This week in television...

Sunday:
Nothing...

Monday:
How I Met Your Mother-The Stinson Missile Crisis
2 Broke Girls-And Strokes of Goodwill
Warehouse 13-Emily Lake/Stand
The Playboy Club-A Matter of Simple Duplicity

Tuesday:
New Girl-Wedding

Wednesday:
Happy Endings-Baby Steps

Thursday:
Big Bang Theory-The Wiggly Finger Catalyst

Friday:
Fringe-Alone in the World

Saturday:
Bedlam-Driven

Unfortunately, I had to cut PanAm from my schedule. Engineering classes are eating up all my time, and something had to go. It's one of the reasons I'm glad Warehouse 13 season is ending, then I won't have as much stuff to keep up with. Although, if my classes continue like this, I'll have to cut The Playboy Club from my schedule also. Not because it's at the bottom of my list, but because I would be willing to buy the season on dvd, and while I'm doing that for Fringe, I can't miss an episode of Fringe. If I had to choose one show to follow (now that the Doctor Who season has ended), it would be Fringe. If this happened at the same time as Doctor Who...well, I would find a way to watch both. I couldn't choose between them.

University Advice

Take summer courses. Retake them if necessary. In my experience, financial aid will actually cover most of the high summer costs. You should at least sign up and apply for financial aid and see what you get. If you can't do it, you can always just drop the classes before the summer session even starts.

He tells his mom

The guy who recorded a video when he came out to his dad and posted it on youtube (My post about it) also did one for when he told his mom.

This one was tougher than when he told his dad. He had to explain a lot more (and the whole Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve thing comes up) but he did it and she still loves him. My mom was like this when I came out to her last year, and while she is not 100% okay, she is doing better (slowly but surely). I hope his mom gets better with it also.

What's next?

I've been wondering this for a while now. Once LGBT rights are done, what's next? Now, I know there will still be anti-gay people, just like there are still sexists and racists even those are protected groups across the U.S. But once there are LGBT protections, what's next? I can't think of anything that people are born with (gender, skin, orientation) that would be discriminated against next. Maybe atheist? I know there are a lot of people who's families would be angry if they found out they were atheists. Although there are legal protections concerning religion already, but it could be more of an acceptance movement than anything...your thoughts?

Rooster Teeth

Here are my top six videos from Rooster Teeth. If you haven't seen any of them, you should watch at least one. They are really funny. I had a hard enough time narrowing it down to six to post on here, so I'm not going to rank my absolute favorite. I'd say watch all six. If you go to their site, they have many, many more.

And I'll leave you with a quote from one of them. "Is that the new slogan? You know it's not very catchy at all. You know, I mean I guess it's better than 'What can brown do for you?' because that one reminds everyone of pooping."

NFL Protects Sexual Orientation

Thanks to Joe.My.God. for this.

The new football rules:
Section 1. No Discrimination: There will be no discrimination in any form against any player by the Management Council, any Club or by the NFLPA because of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or activity or lack of activity on behalf of the NFLPA.
I don't watch football, but I'm glad that progress is being made. I'm guessing it's just as lonely being a gay football player (even in college or high school) as being a gay engineer.

Alan Turing

Born: June 23, 1912
Died: June 7, 1954

He is another reason I started this blog. He was such a good scientist/engineer and a big part in heling defeat the Germans during WWII. He is even partly responsible for the computers we have today. (Those of you who know computers will know that he was responsible for the Turing machine and Turing test, both of which are major parts of computers.) But even after all that, he was still persecuted for being gay, eventually commiting suicide (most likely). I know I won't forget his story.

Q&A

Hello,

I would love to do a Q&A about being a gay mechanical engineering major (or other stuff, keeping it PG-13 and under). Feel free to post in the comments some questions and once I have enough (or if enough time has passed) I'll answer them here. Here's some random stuff about myself:

I'm a 21 year old gay mechanical engineering major in my senior year. I'm pretty sure I've never met another gay engineer (you never know).

I watch a lot of sci-fi stuff. I love the shows Fringe and Doctor Who, as well as other shows like How I Met Your Mother, New Girl, Big Bang Theory, Eureka, Warehouse 13 and many more.

I do read some comics, but it's hard for me to keep up during the school year. The one I manage to keep up with is Fables. I want to catch up in Runaways and Young Avengers. I also plan to start Teen Titans and Stormwatch, eventually...

I play Pokemon sometimes, I actually ended up missing Diamond, Pearl, SoulSilver and HeartGold, but my boyfriend bought me a DSi and Pokemon White, so I was getting back into it until school started.

I plan to use this blog to talk about being gay in engineering as well as random stuff in my life, like coming out to the rest of my family (my mom and dad know). I hope it's not too boring.

And, that's some random stuff about me. Ask away.

Thursday, September 22, 2011

Hello

I know this happened two days ago, but with school and everything I've been busy. However, I wasn't too busy to watch this video.

I found this very moving. Seriously, it reminded me a lot of the conversation I had with my dad when I came out. Well, except that I'm not a soldier, and I was able to tell my dad in person. And yes, I'm gay. I'm sure you gathered that from the title. But more than that, I'm also an engineering student. And this video inspired me to start talking about that. Being gay in engineering, I feel very alone. I know no other gay engineers. Period. And I know of no gay engineers to have as role models either. So I decided to create this blog (since I'm not that great with videos) to talk about my experiences with life and let any other gay engineers/scientists know that they are not alone.

I'm gay;
I'm geeky;
I'm an engineer.

P.S. I'm also Mexican-American, but I felt that would have made the title of this blog too long.
P.S.S. And by Mexican-American, I mean I was born in the U.S., but my ancestry is Mexican.

DragonCon! 2011

(From my old blog)

Woohoo! DragonCon! I'm so excited to see it. I'll be posting later as to what happens there. Unless what happens there stays there. I'm not sure on the rules.

Edit: Dec 4th

I actually had a ton of fun at DragonCon. There were so many interesting things there, I had a ton of fun with my friends. We took so many pictures of people in costumes. (Cosplaying? I'm not quite sure on the terminology yet...) I would seriously consider going again, and it's made me want to go to other conventions as well. Here's hoping one year it'll be ComiCon!

Happy Mother's Day

(From old blog)

Happy Mother's Day! I really wish it was next week though, I have finals for the next two days and have to study, feel so bad about having to ignore my mom :( But she understands, plus I did get her a present, so there's that. :)

Osama Bin Laden

(From old blog)

He's dead. While I'm happy that a bad man died, I'm not really celebrating because a man died. While he was bad, he was still a man. At some point he was a baby and he got corrupted. It was a necessary evil on our part. I'm just curious to see what happens next, especially since this has been a part of my world view since I was 11.

And now for something funny:

Happy Valentines Day

(From old blog)

You know what sucks in a long distance relationship? Holidays. Especially the ones during the school semester. Can't wait to graduate so I can move...

Don't let me drag you down though, have a Happy Valentines Day! I will probably be in the same spot next year (except in my Senior year of college, as opposed to my Junior year).

If everyone were homosexual...

(From my old blog)

So I read a post about a common saying, "If everyone were homosexual, the human race would die out" once I got past the obvious flaws in this, I started thinking, "Well, if everyone were homosexual, there would be no unwanted children, since every pregnancy would be planned. Also, if everyone were homosexual, there would be no teen pregnancy, since pregnancy would have to be planned." And this got me to the conclusion, "If everyone were homosexual, there would be no abortion, since women would have to be artificially inceminated and that leads to a doctors check up which would find if the woman's body would be able to handle the pregnancy (from the way I understand it anyway)." So there you go anti-abortion/pro-life people, make everyone gay, and you'll have no more abortions.

Go ahead and comment if you can come up with more.
